Patient care technicians are becoming increasingly important in the healthcare field, if I may repeat myself. They help the healthcare team and the patient in all kinds of ways.

For example, the patient care technician, also known as the PCT for short, makes sure the nurses, doctors, and patients needs are handled promptly and professionally. Anybody who has been to the doctor or hospital for a serious illness knows that it can be stressful. The faint at heart, including family members, can be overwhelmed by this stress.

Hospitals and health care facilities have come to recognize this. Hence, the need for them to employ the services of patient care technicians.

These technicians help lessen this stress for patients and their family members during the hospital or health care facility stay.

These valuable members of the health team also perform a number of health care related duties. A PCT does many of the same duties as people who are known as nursing assistants, nursing aides or hospital attendants. In most hospitals or health care facilities, these terms are fairly interchangeable. But some of these hospitals or health care facilities make patient care technician do a few additional responsibilities and duties.

To become a patient care technician, one must know the important things to study in their training program. Below are some of the most important ones to know:

The program of study must cover the essentials of CPR, basic first aid, and teach you how to check a patient’s pulse, respirations, temperature and blood pressure. Students also learn how to assist doctors and nurses during medical exams. You will even be taught how to draw blood, discontinue an IV, hook up a heart monitor, use the EKG machines, and assist with basic laboratory tests and procedures being performed in a clinical setting.

These types of career courses will involve in-class lectures as well as practical work performed with real patients. Basic anatomy and physiology is only one of the classes that will be taught to students in PCT classes.

Extern classes in hospitals and clinics are often viewed as the essential and highlight of any patient care technician curriculum. This is the time when you are allowed to put your new knowledge to work in a patient setting. Under the guidance of a registered nurse, you will be practicing your new skills and really helping those individuals who need your caring help and assistance.
